Introduction
There are said to be millions (or trillions?) of tiny chakras that inhabit our bodies. Each one is responsible for maintaining our health, working on the subtle, energetic level. According to the book, healing with crystals and crystal energies, by Sue and Simon Lilly, p. 168, "Over the last five thousand years, sages, philosophers and mystics have described the subtle energies in our environment and within our bodies in many different ways. Several systems have developed to explain them in the context of other philosophical backgrounds. However, it was generally agreed that wherever dynamic energies meet together in nature they form spinning circular patterns, or vortices."
The word, 'chakra' is Sanskrit for 'wheel'. It is believed that the human body has seven main chakras, which can be divided up into two categories: the 'higher chakras' and the 'lower chakras'. The 'higher chakras' consist of the chakras that are of a higher vibration. They are the crown chakra, brow chakra, throat chakra and heart chakra. The 'lower chakras' are chakras that are of a lower vibration that the higher chakras. They are the solar plexus, sacral and root or base chakra. These chakras are denser in vibration.
According to the book, the seers of ancient India "...described these in the Vedas, the primary source of all Hindu cosmology and philosophy, codified around 3000 BC. According to the Vedic seers, wherever two or more channels of subtle energy meet, there is a vortex..." These vortexes (chakras) appeared, to the Vedic seers as "...funnel-shaped, multi-coloured and related to spiritual qualities..."
The seven main chakras are believed to play an important role in the development of psychic skills. They are visualised in meditation in psychic and mediumistic circles, because of this. Visualisation aids the ability to be 'clairvoyant' (which is the seeing of mental images in the mind). Hearing sounds, words or coversations with spirit guides in meditation is seen as helping or enhancing the faculty of the psychic to be a 'clairaudient'.
When physical illness develops, it first is said to have developed on the astral body, then manifest as a blockage in a chakra. Please click on the chakras below to be taken to the separate entries.

Energy blockages
As mentioned in my reflexology post, chakras can get "blocked" energetically, just like meridians and acupuncture points can. When these become severe, they manifest themselves in the physical body as symptoms of illness. Chakras can be cleansed or "opened" through health dowsing, in which a pendulum is held over the blocked chakra and the dowser makes an affirmation to cleanse and open up the chakra. Chakras can also be dowsed; typically if the pendulum, whilst held over the specific chakra, does a clockwise circular motion, it means that the chakra is open. Imbalance is supposed to be shown if the chakra does a very small circle or a very wide circle - the latter indicates that the chakra is too wide open, which can cause havoc for the other chakras since the imbalanced chakra is getting more than its fair share of energy - essentially it is 'hogging' the energy, meaning that the other chakras may not be getting enough energy to function properly.
Dealing with energy blockages
According to The Chakra Handbook - by Shalila Sharamon and Bodo J. Baginski p.44, "There are two fundamental ways of influencing our chakras in a harmonious and liberating manner. The first way consists of exposing the chakras to energy vibrations that are close to the ones in which a harmoniously functioning chakra free of blockages naturally vibrates. Such energy vibrations can be found inpure, glowing colours, in gemstones, in sounds and ethereal oils as well as in the elements and the profusion of expression found in nature. As soon as frequencies flow into the chakras that are higher and purer than the energies present in the chakra itself, they begin to vibrate faster, and the slower frequencies of the blockages dissolve step by step."
Therapies such as colour healing, crystal therapy, acupuncture, kinesiology, Reiki and energy healing and sound healing are supposed to maintain holistic health - that is, health on the energetic system of the body (acupuncture points, chakras and meridians), as well as health on the physical body. Each chakra is said to be of a particular frequency or vibration and resonates with a particular sound. For example, the brow chakra can be stimulated by verbally humming the vowel "EE".
